Meeting Summary
Date: Jan. 13, 2009
1. Work group activities and accomplishments since the last meeting:
Volunteer Recruitment Center phone number is being advertised. LINC Houston is providing IT support for a volunteer web portal.
Repair & Rebuild Work Group decided to table the issue of hiring a construction coordinator, and will test using committee volunteers to triage construction fund requests.
2. Highlights of meeting discussion:
Committee discussed the pros and cons of the current LTRC structure. Henry N. said it is the Committee’s call and that he will support whatever decision we make. He referenced the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) Long Term Recovery Manual as the blueprint for effective LTROs. It was pointed out that our organizing documents are based on the NVOAD Manual. The point was also made that, unlike in other communities, this community and the organizations involved have considerable experience working together in long term recovery.
The point was made that national recovery organizations want to feel secure that we have an organized structure and that democratic principles are observed before they commit resources. Electing officers was discussed and rejected. Committee members agreed that we have a good structure in place and that it is probably more transparent than if we had a five-member executive team. The group unanimously reaffirmed support for the current committee structure with Peter C. as facilitator and chief spokesperson, and work groups communicating through the steering committee.
3. Support and/or action needed from another work group, Steering Committee and/or Long Term Recovery Committee:
Jennifer P. will reassess opportunity to draft local volunteers through churches.
4. Barriers and/or concerns:
There is some concern about outside organizations misunderstanding our committee structure, particularly if it discourages them from supporting our efforts. Jennifer P. said she is personally following up with major faith-based organizations on this issue.
5. Action Items:
Jan. 5, 2009, meeting minutes approved with revisions.
Motion to reaffirm Peter C. as LTRC facilitator was approved.
Next Meeting: TBD
Attendance: Amanda T., Dave D., Linda O., Carol F., Jennifer P., Najah C., Carrie M., Henry N., Eddie H., Marcela B., Mark J., Ann H., Ruama C., Peter C.
