Meeting Summary
Date: April 20, 2009
1. Agreement on Committee Leadership
Peter Carson is leaving the United Way to move overseas, we at the GHLTRC wish the best to Peter and want to thank him for all of his hard work.
The United Way will continue as active and supporting member to the GHLTRC, in addition to its fiduciary role to the GHLTRC. The United Way nominated Jennifer Posten of Interfaith Ministries to be the new Facilitator of the GHLTRC. Due to Jennifer’s years of experience in disaster and because Interfaith Ministries as an organization is not engaged in LTR services, making Jennifer a logical nomination.
Amanda drew light on the fact that due to Jennifer’s role with local and state emergency managers that a back up should be identified in case Jennifer is called way because of an impending hurricane. Linda O. agreed to look into this matter.
Jennifer’s nomination was approved and the members voted unanimously in favor of the nomination.
2. Increasing coordination, efficiency and effectiveness
Amanda drew attention for the need to explore strategic funding sources and to collaborate with Harris County and City of Houston to facilitate systems and processes to match services to needs and avoid duplications.
This discussion was tabled for next week’s meeting in order to devote more time to the topic.
3. Work Group Reports
• Volunteer Management - Nothing new to report
• Spiritual and Mental Health – Pat McElliott reported that the group still lacks a Spiritual care component since Reagan Jacks departure and that the group is waiting for case management to fully come online
• Donation & Warehousing - Linda Walker reported that she is still pursuing Lowes for donations and has drafted a letter regarding donations
• Case Mgmt – Dave reported that they are still moving toward a May 1 start but has hesitations because of the pace of the Federal Partners that oversee the case mgmt funding.
• Repair & Rebuild – Amanda reported that tomorrow’s R &R meeting will focus on policies and procedure, capturing and reporting data and documentation. Coordination of volunteer and paid construction managers, collaborations between groups like but not limited to Sheltering Arms, COH REEP, and AAA.
4. Other Items and Next Steps
Marcel – reported that there is a need for children to express their concerns about Ike and suggested “story space” for kids at up-coming events like that of the NWS Hurricane Workshop. Jennifer P. will follow-up with DePelchin.
Ru – Reported about the many programs that GRACE Community Services offers to children and teenagers
