Greater Houston Long Term Recovery Committee
Repair and Rebuild Work Group

Meeting Summary
January 27, 2009

1. Work Group Activities and Accomplishments since the Last Meeting:

Meeting Summary Approved for January 20
January 24 work day occurred as scheduled

2. Highlights of Meeting Discussion:

On January 24 the Long Term Recovery held its first word day. Three roofs were worked on that day in Denver Harbor/Magnolia Park area.

All in attendance agreed the word day went well.

We had 51 volunteers for the day and the volunteer set up went well according to Volunteer Houston.

Discussion moved around how to make this move so that an entire roof can be fixed in one day. These roofs worked on for work day all had remaining work to be done that LINC Houston would see to having finished.

Suggestions were that more supplies be available for the work days such as wheelbarrows, shovels, nail guns, compressors.

Also there was some discussion of timeliness of material delivery to work sites.

A suggestion was made that the group as a whole purchase the work tools and share them as needed to cut costs. Question rose as to where they would be stored and by whom?

As this moves forward, should a spreadsheet of houses in progress be created and a tally kept of where we are with each? Then a check off would occur at the completion of the work for that home.

Installation should be done prior to roofing being done to avoid waste of utilities. Also, gas heaters question raised, should they be on if the doors are open during work day.

REEP: For Houston Hope Neighborhoods there is help with low efficiency appliances. Suggestion was made to ask a Rep for them to attend one of our meetings.

There have been some issues in the past for Home Depot orders over a certain amount. Donna is the contact for them now who will get the orders pushed through.

For homes that still have limbs and trees on them and the home is unsafe and the tenants are elderly or disabled, call Henry with FEMA at 540.270.3970. He will try to get them help.

Project managers are responsible for many things, one being teaching the unskilled how to work on these homes to the ability they are able. The number of crews of volunteers will always rely on the number of project managers.

A cleanup crew was suggested for these work days. The clean up of the old roof was very laborious and took many hours.

Safety clothing a must on these work days and with volunteers. Safety goggles needed.

Suggestion was made to have a work day a month using one home for each non profit to work on so that there would be several locations for volunteers to choose from. These days will need to be set at the next meeting so that volunteer committee has time to get the days covered.

Triple AAA has some money for professional tree removal for 60 and over. Call Jennifer Posten for this info.

End Work Day Discussion

Begin Funding Policy Discussions

We need letter head for the long term recovery committee.

Need to find out the cost of permits and try to secure trash haul off.

We need to leave the home safe, sanitary and secure.

A site inspection will need to be done to determine if a roof repair is done, will the home be livable and stay up.

With the money that United Way has, we should have a goal to repair 130 homes.

3. Support and /or action needed from another group, steering committee or the ltr committee:

Work Days to be determined.

Policies for funding

4. Barriers or concerns:

Number of volunteers that can be accessed that are skilled. How much can we expect unskilled volunteers to do?

Secretary at each site, who?

How to get the public awareness going with a human twist?

5. Action items:

Think of dates for the monthly work days.

Clean up funding policies.

Next meeting: 2/3/09 at the United Way of Greater Houston 10am
