Notes from 9/26/05 TGCR VOAD Conference Call Meeting

There will be a conference call for all VOAD member agencies every day at noon for the foreseeable future. To participate, dial 1-800-320-4330 and put in the PIN 049682 (followed by the pound sign) #.

  • The Seventh Day Adventists are setting up a 55,000 sq ft. multi-agency warehouse in Crosby. The warehouse will service all agencies who want to pick up materials. There will be an inventory system for agencies to look at soon. The address was not given today but will be soon.
  • Houston’s United Way office has fielded 16,000 phone calls made to 211, mostly for locating shelter and feeding sites. UW anticipates requests for direct assistance to increase within the next two weeks as evacuees in tight economic circumstances begin to run out of money.
  • The status of George R. Brown is unclear at the moment. It may still be a medical center and will probably become a communications center. GRB is currently also serving as a temporary shelter for evacuees returning to Houston with no place to go (16 as of today).
  • Visit http://www.hcjic.org/ (Harris County Joint Information Center) for up-to-date information on local Katrina and Rita relief efforts.
  • Red Cross reports a need to feed 200,000 people TODAY (County breakdown: Chambers 3,000; Galveston 4,000; Liberty 50,000; Montgomery 70,000; Polk 40,000, San Jacinto 23,000; Trinity 10,000).
  • FEMA is setting up the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at the 610 Loop at Wayside in the old Olshan building. Any agency/organization wishing to have space there is encouraged to visit tomorrow afternoon before the site is opened to clients. Contact is Kristin Later 713-685-2300.
  • There will be a meeting today hosted by the Montgomery Co. United Way at 3 PM to help coordinate a VOAD-type effort in Liberty Co. Meeting location is at 600 Lake Front Circle, The Woodlands, 77380.

VOAD IS REQUESTING A BRIEF WRITTEN REPORT TO BE E-MAILED TO CAROLYN SHELL (RED CROSS), which will be e-mailed out to all of the VOAD members.
