Red Cross Community Recovery Program
While the devastation caused by 2005 Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma may no longer be a staple of the nightly news, the consequences of these historic storms are very much a daily challenge for the thousands of families still suffering their effects. The American Red Cross realizes that providing support for families and communities devastated by the hurricanes will take months and years.
To ensure the ongoing hurricane-caused needs are addressed, the Red Cross is launching a dedicated effort, the Hurricane Recovery Program for the Gulf Coast. This initiative builds upon the tremendous accomplishments to date of nearly 220,000 volunteers from chapters in hurricane zones and beyond, encompassing all 50 states and many US territories.
The Recovery Program has two primary goals, in addition to supporting the lessons-learned process:
1. To offer families in-depth casework and help in developing a recovery plan tailored to their needs. And as families pursue their plans, caseworkers will work one-on-one with clients through their recovery to ensure that each family is able to take advantage of all available resources.
2. On the community level, the Red Cross will play a convening, integrating role locally, providing a forum to coordinate the assistance of partner agencies, community government and local service groups. This coordination strengthens communities and makes it easier for families to navigate their options.
Given the epic destruction left by last year’s Gulf hurricanes, we anticipate the Recovery Program to be active about two years. While its goals are ambitious, this is a strong example of our organization wide commitment to the families affected by these storms. We will be providing detailed updates on our plans for this program in the coming weeks.
