GHLTRC Meeting Summary Date: August 6, 2009 1. Work group activities and accomplishments since the last meeting: 2. Highlights of meeting discussion: Work group reports: Case management work group – Mr. Dave Detcher an update on the case management pilot. He reported that the next case management work group meeting will be held on August 26 at 2:30 p.m. Case management staffing and training is now complete and case management is underway. A report on the database will be available at the next meeting. Three outreach events were held in Baytown, LaPorte/Shore Acres and Pasadena. Ms. Yesenia Castillo is the new outreach coordinator. Three more outreach events are scheduled for Harbach Ripley on the weekend of August 8 and 9, Sunnyside on August 28 and Independence Heights on September 11. Repair and rebuild work group – Ms. Jennifer Posten reported that the Repair and Rebuild Work Group is working on the Social Services Block Grant application. In addition, they are looking at a shared database. The GHLTRC Guide to Operations that contains all policies and procedures and all forms are posted on www.tgcr.voad.org. The group is now meeting every other week. Volunteer management work group - Ms. Kathleen Bailey reported the first Saturday work days are still being held. The next one is scheduled for September 12. In August, nine people completed home in Independence Heights. Volunteer Houston has moved to Richmond at Eastside. Donations and warehousing work group – Ms. Linda Walker has been in contact with a furniture company that is selling refurbished mattresses at discounted rates. She is buying 10 sets to assess the quality and value of the mattresses. Spiritual and mental health work group - Ms. Pat McElliot reported that the Spiritual and Mental Health Work Group has scheduled three trainings with NCI Case Managers. They are still available for consultations and therapy. In addition, they are currently coordinating on the Social Services Block Grant proposal. Social Services Block Grant Discussion and Reports: Ms. Jennifer Posten reported that the Social Services Block Grant bidders conference was very positive. Goal is to help hurricane victims that reside in 13 county area. Neighborhood Centers Inc. has agreed to be the lead agency. The GHLTRC group broke out into subgroups to discuss developing the proposal for the Social Service Block Grant. Report highlights: Employment – Mr. Eric Goode, Houston Area Urban League, reported that providers of employment services discussed having a menu of services: Outreach/intake/assessment ESL/training/job readiness Career counseling/coaching Job Placement Repair/Rebuild – Ms. Gwen Frank, LINC, reported that they worked on developing a formula for unit cost for service. Mark Junkens will compile and prepare the repair and rebuild statement for the proposal. Spiritual/mental health – Ms. Pat McElliott reported that the group identified the following needs: counseling, health-related services, home-based services, information and referral, substance abuse counseling as needs and will develop their section for the proposal. Legal – The group will compile a separate legal proposal and submit for the whole region to provide legal services to Hurricane Ike affected individuals. Unmet Needs – The group developed list of unmet need items needed: beds and frames, tables and chairs, kitchen essentials, analog telephones, utility assistance, food stock assistance, microwave/stoves. They will submit information to include in the proposal. Deadlines: Feedback on NCI materials due by August 7 at 5 p.m. Two page service summary due by August 15 at 12 noon. Agency commitment letter due by August 15 at 12 noon. Please direct all SSBG questions to either Ann Hilbig at NCI or Najah Callander at United Way. 3. Barriers and/or concerns: 4.
