Org. Description: The Bonita Street "House of Hope" is committed to the redevelopment and revitalization of communities where conditions of poverty, crime, drugs and violence have staggered the hope and wounded the dreams of its' people. Our mission is to revive hope to a dying community and inspire people to DREAM. Founded in 1995 by Tyrone Evans, the Bonita Street "House of Hope" is the only comprehensive seamless care program in Houston that provides the support and services needed for women to move from the streets to independent living. The Bonita Street "House of Hope" (BHH) offers more than 200 beds and applies a holistic approach by uniquely combining substance abuse treatment with transitional living and permanent housing. We target a population of women and women with children that have been hindered by negative stereotypes – chemically dependant, ex-offenders, HIV/AIDS sufferers and those with co-occurring mental illness and addiction. BHH offers professional, career and spiritual development, adequate nutritional services, transportation, individual and/or group counseling, case management, GED preparation, job training and referrals, and HIV/AIDS specific workshops that help the afflicted overcome the physical, mental, and spiritual stigma of the disease. BHH has established an extensive outreach and referral network through alliances with a multitude of community organizations, including hospitals, correctional supervision authorities, churches, shelters, treatment programs and social service providers. Hurricane Katrina has caused the devastation of an entire city leaving the lives of countless survivors in mayhem. In an effort to provide some stability in a time of such uncertainty, Bonita House has taken in thirty families who were forced to evacuate their homes in Louisiana and come to Houston with nothing. The Bonita Street facility was closed and up for sale when the hurricane hit. Tyrone Evans, Founder and President, decided to open the doors as an emergency shelter for these displaced families. Our neighbors from Louisiana are in need of things like housing, food, clothing, medical care, prescription drugs, transportation, and emotional as well as spiritual support. Bonita House is currently providing the following services to the Katrina survivors:

Housing, Food, and Clothing

Utilities, Staff, Emotional and Spiritual Support
